My belief about trauma work is that the goal is not to “fix” you, it is to cherish and respect what you have gone through and grow into who you are. See the scars as beautiful symbols of strength rather than ugly symbols of weakness.
Welcome! My name is Madison (Maddie) Domin (she/her & they/them), and I am a queer, Latinx, larger bodied, detribalized Indigenous social worker that is WAY too obsessed with houseplants. I grew up on the outskirts of Austin while escaping to the city as often as possible once I got my drivers license. I attended TCU in Fort Worth where I fell in love with social work after I attempted being a business major for a singular semester (that econ class did not work out). I obtained my BSW and immediately began my MSSW on a clinical track at UT Austin. After graduating and obtaining my LMSW, I worked in community mental healthcare in the Transgender Wellness Program of Out Youth working with queer and trangender young adults. Working with queer and trans folks allowed me to pour into my community while also prioritizing my personal, professional, and ethical responsibilities.
As someone who has spent a lot of time in therapy, I know that finding a therapist that feels like a good fit can be tricky. I am proud of you for engaging in that search, as I know it can be nerve racking.
I specialize in working with teens 15+, young adults, queer and transgender individuals, women, people who dissociate, and people who practice ethical non-monogamy. My niche is childhood trauma, emotional and sexual abuse, and life transitions. Additionally, I see couples and am Gottman Level 1 trained.
My approach to trauma work is based within the neuroscience of trauma and the connection between your mind and body. I aim to share with you and educate you about what a traumatized brain does and how your brain may be doing something similar or completely different. Once we are familiar with you and your brain, I combine talk therapy with tools and techniques that may allow you to get to know your reaction and beliefs in a different way (such as Internal Family Systems, Polyvagal Theory, cognitive restructuring, and Sand Tray).
As your therapist, I want to offer you an inclusive space where you can feel brave and comfortable to be your authentic self, somewhere where you can laugh as much as you cry. My therapeutic approach is based on the relationship we build. I understand that being vulnerable with someone takes time, and I am committed to building a relationship with you wherein you feel comfortable with me walking next to you in your journey of healing and growth. I am committed to walking next to you that journey while also allowing you to remain the expert on yourself. Being a queer latinx person living in a larger body, I understand the impact that societal standards/ridicule has on our well-being and trauma responses and the power that can be stripped away or feel unattainable. I am committed to respecting and incorporating any and all identities that a client feels is pertinent to their treatment. I utilize a person in environment theory that allows me to consider not only you but the influences of your environment on your mental health and wellbeing.
While all of this may sound overwhelming, the largest thing I would want my clients to know is that therapy can be messy, overwhelming, and hard. Therapy is also beautiful, a collaborative art form where we are building, strengthening, discovering, and cherishing ourselves for the sake of our own well being and healing. My belief about trauma work is that the goal is not to “fix” you, it is to cherish and respect what you have gone through and grow into who you are. See the scars as beautiful symbols of strength rather than ugly symbols of weakness.
As mentioned above, working with the LGBTQ+ community has been healing for my inner teen. I began therapy in my early teen years when I felt lost, worthless, and unable to be loved. As someone who was actively attempting to survive trauma while navigating my identities, therapy was one of the few places where I felt peace (other places include: in a book, windows down and music up, and baking). I hope to inspire peace within my clients as we walk together in their journey of healing, as everyone deserves peace and the ability to grow.
When I am not existing in my therapist role, you can find me cuddled up on the couch with my partner and our little dog reading a sappy queer romance book (I have so many book recs) surrounded by too many house plants, perusing vintage shops for gems, or attempting to nail down a recipe for some random baked good.
